Description

Today’s adolescents and young adults engage in the social world in a markedly different way than previous generations. Some young adults often use social media and online gaming as a replacement for interpersonal relationships or to escape the anxiety-producing thoughts and situations adult life tasks invoke. The pervasiveness of technology and the internet is one of many factors involved in the recent trend of young adults struggling to transition into independent adulthood. Further, the current pandemic has exacerbated the unhealthy use of screens to avoid responsible, adult behaviors. Such “failure to launch” is especially prevalent in those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), ADHD, anxiety, depression, etc. In this three-hour workshop, Dr. Kimberly B. Harrison, Ph.D. will highlight strategies for partnering with young adults and their families in developing “adulting” skills and resilience, as well as facilitating meaningful social connection.

Objectives

Objective #1 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to identify common skills necessary for successful adult functioning, discuss how inclusion of the self in the social world impacts the “adulting” process, and identify primary factors influencing transition to adulthood.
Objective #2 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to discuss common roadblocks for developing adult skills and learn remediation strategies to assist in gaining effective adult skills.
Objective #3 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to learn several preventative measures to put in place with children and preadolescents to help them develop resilience and prepare them for the launch into independent young adulthood.

I work with children, adolescents and adults on a variety of issues. Most of my work is based on the principles of Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). My therapy plans are goal-oriented, with specific, measurable steps so that you can track progress. I will help you discover the "problem behind the problem" and then we'll work together to formulate solutions. I enjoy collaborating with my patients on many types of issues, but have quite a bit of extra training in working with children with ADHD and their parents, as well as with persons with Asperger's-type autism. Children, adolescents and adults with ADHD and Asperger's-type autism are areas of focus for my practice. I have developed a unique system of identifying strengths and weaknesses related to ADHD/ASD brain functioning, and then creating a personalized plan to improve life (e.g., school, work, home, relationships). My goal is to meet people where they are, look beyond surface symptoms to determine root issues, and then develop plans to move forward. The Adulting Program for young adults with ASD includes individual therapy, family meetings, and daily check-in to help with the transition to adulthood.
