A Self-Inquiry on Race Socialization
Multicultural guidelines dictate that White therapists examine their own racial identity to better serve clients of color. This workshop will specifically focus on aspects of White socialization to help therapists self-assess their own White racial identity. In addition, Menakem’s H-I-P-P theory of how historical trauma is somatically held in the body will be presented to better understand the typical nervous system response in a White body. Ways White therapists can navigate their own somatic countertransference reactions when working with clients of color will be examined. Dr. Fatter will describe ways White privilege and White fragility can show up in a therapy session as well as provide examples of specific types of microaggressions that can damage the therapeutic relationship. This workshop will include experiential exercises for self-inquiry and growth towards becoming an anti-racist White therapist.
Objectives
Objective #1 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to report current trends in multicultural competency.Objective #2 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to describe qualities of White culture, White Privilege and White Fragility and ways they can show up in clinical work
Objective #3 Based on the content of this program, participants will be able to increase awareness of one’s own internalization of White culture and racial socialization.
Daphne Fatter, PhD
I am a mid-career licensed psychologist in private practice in McKinney, Texas. Texas Psychologist License #36337. In total, I have provided therapeutic services in a variety of settings including university counseling centers, a hospital inpatient clinic, and outpatient clinics. I also teach webinars for tzkseminars to provide continuing education for therapists and psychologists worldwide. I have completed the Learning to Lead training by Challenging Racism to facilitate dialogues on racism and facilitate trainings and workshops on white race socialization. I also am a certified ancestral medicine practitioner using ancestral lineage repair based on the Ancestral Medicine approach of Dr. Daniel Foor.
