Sibling Aggression Antecedents, Outcomes, and Clinical Interventions

Conflict among siblings is frequently viewed as a normal part of the sibling relationship with sibling aggression cited as one of the most commonly occurring forms of aggression within the family. Sibling aggression has been linked to increased emotional distress, behavioral concerns, poor academic achievement, low social competence, and poorer adjustment in children. Additionally, hostile sibling interactions have been associated with dysfunction in various subsystems in the family system. Cultural factors also influence both perceptions and impact of sibling relational dynamics, and thus, will be discussed in the context of sibling aggression. The proposed workshop aims to examine the clinical impact of sibling violence on the family system, sibling subsystem, and individuals involved. Clinical interventions for working with siblings and parental education on the management of sibling aggression will be discussed. Further, issues regarding reporting and policy will be addressed.
